I kind of understand why a lot of people turn to God now. It's the comfort. When you're dealing with something like death, it's incredibly hard to contemplate the absolute emptiness that follows it.

Without God, without an after-life, what remains when you die? From an atheist viewpoint, nothing does. You just disappear. And your loved ones? When they go, that's it. You will never get to see them again. They no longer exist, and your memories are all you have left.

Death seems cold and indifferent and it leaves you feeling rather empty.

Adding the concept of God and an after life where the dead 'move on to a better place' make death easier to swallow. Whether it's true or not is irrelevant.

For some reason I've been feeling extremely dejected lately. Maybe it's just the pressure from everything. At what point does a child become an adult? Is it when he hits 18? Is it after he graduates from uni? When you're a kid, you look up to adults and see a completely different world. Adults just seem to know everything: what to do, how to handle things. Yet it seems with the snap of a finger, you yourself are now an 'adult' all of a sudden. It doesn't feel any different. You're the same person, except now carrying a multitude of responsibilities and problems, and all you look forward to are those brief moments of respite in between. I miss the days when the biggest problem on my mind was that assignment due next week, or that test tomorrow, or even how to get my pokemon to level 100. In many ways, these are still issues for me (pokemon especially) but now their importance seems to be drowned out by a sea of other worries. As time passes by, life only seems to get more complicated; you get tangled up in an intricate web of taxes, mortgages, bills, 'adult stuff'.

As a kid, I, like many others, envisioned many things for the 'adult' me. I don't know about others, but personally I look at myself now, and don't see much.

I just spent my entire day at McDonalds working the craziest shift ever (starting from 11:45am and finishing at like 11:15pm). And just HOLY SHIT I didn't even realize that my whole day disappeared.

My coworker kept saying "think of the money. MONEY MAKES YOU HAPPY. YOU WORK HERE FOR HAPPINESS"

of course that was said in a joking manner, but working so much lately, it really feels like I've become a slave to money, and now I'm starting to wonder if this is good for my soul.. LOL

When I was a kid I always thought, I'd work a job that I enjoyed doing, regardless of pay. As I've grown though, I've come to realize how important money really is (especially when you want to do things.. Everything costs money. God damn it). As a result, here I am now, spending hours and hours of my time at McDonalds for a couple hundred bucks a week. Am I happy? I don't know. Work is actually fun sometimes, but when you work 30 hours a week every week.. it kind of burns you out, and the money's all you have to keep you going.

I read an article last year on Cracked (read: awesomest site ever), about 5 things that you'd think would make you happy, but wouldn't really. Money was one of them. Nigeria, despite being shit poor, is the happiest country on earth according to surveys.

Above is an excerpt from one of my favourite short stories, entitled Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Without giving away too much, the story concerns Charlie Gordon, a man considered 'mentally deficient' who agrees to undergo a surgical brain treatment in order to increase his IQ.

It's quite touching, and it really got me thinking about the nature of the brain, and how sometimes the mind can be a prison in itself.

Been listening to the Wicked soundtrack lately and holy shit I really want to see it again.

It's so awesome : ( and really puts a spin on the Wizard of Oz story.

If you've been living under a rock and don't know what Wicked is about, it's based on a novel by Gregory Maguire which explores the history of the Wicked Witch of The West before the happenings of The Wizard of Oz, as told from her point of view.

What pulled me into the musical, aside from the shiny colours, flamboyant costumes and catchy songs (Defying Gravity anyone?) is how the plot cleverly turns around a lot of things you think you know from the Wizard of Oz. By the end of it all your perception of the original Wizard of Oz story is changed and you start to think, who's the real bad guy here? Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, is portrayed as the nicest and most innocent girl, and her character grows on you till you're balling your eyes out at the end when she gets melted by Dorothy's bucket of water.

Just saw Crystal Castles today and hoooooly shit were they awesome.

There was just so much energy in the performance, and the frigging mosh was insane.

Around 10 minutes before they started playing, people already started pushing and jumping up and down. With no music.

So yeah. You can imagine what happened when they DID come in. Add some mfking crazy strobe lights to the equation. I'm pretty sure one chick fainted or something during the second song.

7 minutes into the 60 minute set.

But despite swimming in a sea of bouncy, pushy, sweaty men, and only having enough room for my arms to let me dance like a retarded dinosaur. It was a pretty good gig.

I've got to say that the past two weeks have been some of the damn toughest days of my entire life, especially this week.

As previously mentioned I have been doing summer school, the intenseness of which could only be described by the image of a god damn car crashing into a helicopter in mid-air.

But seriously to give you all a glimpse of the course I'm taking, we've got a test every week, and an assignment due after that and an exam every fortnight.

Also, not previously mentioned, is the fact that I'm simultaneously getting more shifts at an evil institution run by a demented red haired clown called McDonalds.

And really.. the two aren't combining well.

Each day is equivalent to what would be covered in a week during regular uni. I'm in the 3rd day, so in other words i have just covered three weeks of Spanish, and have also already finished 10% of assesments.

Doing summer uni has made me realize though, just how much we take time for granted. Honestly if I wasn't in summer uni spanishing my ass up, I'd probably just be rotting away at home. There's a French professor from Scotch in one of the Spanish classes, taking it solely because apparently there's nothing better for a French professor to do in the holidays *coughgotoFrance?cough*. In other words he's doing this intense son of a bitch for funsies. He's not even taking assesment and basically doesn't get any credit for the course (but he still pays, albeit half price).

I worked the craziest god damn shift I have ever worked in my entire life in maccas today.

As I am not returning to the Philippines this summer, it would've been really cool to have gotten a summer job and earned truckloads of moolah this break.

Unfortunately due to laziness and procrastination (DAMN YOU TWO) I applied too late and so ended up with nothing.

Instead I find myself back at McDonalds, just grabbing at whatever shifts I can find. Working casual means most of the time I'm not even rostered- they just call me either on the day itself or the day before and ask me to work, and i want the moolah, so i take the shifts.

On the plus side, the casual rate is $16 per hour as compared to $13 per hour. That might not seem much, but when you count say, 10 hours of work a week, the difference becomes $30 a week, $120 in a month (MATHS MOOTHERFUCKER). So yeah- it is a big difference.

On the downside, it's really hard to make a schedule around something that's completely arbitrary. I have to bring my mom to physiotherapy twice weekly, and I also want to go out and chill (IT'S SUMMER) but being 'on call' 24/7 makes it hard to fit in these things while still receiving the optimum amount of shifts possible.

In all honesty, I hate being casual, but it's working for now (moolalalalah) so I guess i'll stick with it.

I had my spanish oral exam today and I have to say- as far as roleplays go, it was TERRIBAD.

The topic was a 'catastrophe' happening in the airport, and we were given it only 15 minutes before our actual exam. Unfortunately me and my partner didn't really know many words pertaining to catastrophes and airports so we spent the whole 15 minutes making a grand total of 4 sentences.

Our presentation went something like this.

reporter: What happened here?

Random onlooker: An AEROPLANE CRASHED INTO THE AIRPORT.

Reporter: OH MY GOD!

Random onlooker: EVERYTHING WAS ON FIRE!

*long silence because we only planned our roleplay up to that point*

Reporter: Oh hey do you have the time?

Onlooker: It's 4 o clock

Reporter: Oh man I have to go back to work now! BAI

Onlooker: KK BAI.

*presentation ends, and my hopes of getting H1 in spanish ends with it*

Despite that and how hard spanish is getting, I'm thinking of continuing it next year, mostly because I am inspired by these guys.

So I got a new job at Passionflower working in the kitchen. It's pretty awesome getting free ice cream and making all these fancy $15 desserts, but man I'm working practically everyday of week... for 6 hours.

Add this to uni, a 2000 word essay, and having to take care of certain things for my mom and you have one dead Gabriel.

One thing I noticed I do when all the shit piles up into a massive shit-tower is listen to old music. It reminds me of simpler days, when life wasn't quite as taxing. One of my personal favourites- that's been on repeat for the past hour- is 99 Red Balloons.. How can you not like this song? If my life had a theme song this one would be it. In fact everyone's theme song should be it. IT'S THE BEST SONG EVAR.

I always find myself frightened by how fast time flies. There are so many things in life that we want to do 'in the future', but what we hardly realize is that today is yesterday's future-- and what have we accomplished?

It's been 4 months since my mom was hospitalized due to her aneurysm. Where did all the time go? Looking back at things, so much has happened since then, but at the same time it feels like nothing has happened at all.

Time moves so quickly sometimes that you don't even realize it slipping right through you .

One day you're someone somewhere; the next morning, you wake up and you're someone else in a foreign place. It's been three and a half years since I moved, and I'm starting to lose track of what life used to be. All of a sudden it feels like how it is now, is how it's always been and I have no reason to think otherwise. I guess time just does that to you.

So... I told myself I was going to do some study on the weekend and... HAHAHAHAHA no. I really wish I had the willpower to nerd it up all the time but I just can't be bothered anymore. The fact that nobody else doing Science at Melb actually studies either does not help at all...

On the flipside, I'm teaching myself how to play guitar, and I learned how to play Sunshine Of Your Love (kind of...) WEEKEND PRODUCTIVITY FTW

In other news... Inception was BRILLIANT. And by brilliant I mean extreme mind fuckery, the kind that flips your brain upside down and then blows it up.

The plot itself was okay-ish but my god the directing was spot on. The dream sequences were done extremely well. I WISH my dreams were that awesome (my dreams actually run like B-grade zombie movies...). The idea of a different rate of time in dreams was genius, and how they showed it in the movie was even better (though slightly cheesy imo). Also the underlying concepts beneath everything in the movie- questioning reality, inspiration, rogue subconscious ideas in the mind and the perception of time itself really make you think (and further screw with your brain if the plot wasn't confusing enough for you)

Also, the movie somehow made architects look badass... so WELL DONE CHRISTOPHER NOLAN!
