Romance Languages

Saturday, June 18, 2011

Linguistic relativity is a concept which theorizes that the vocabulary of a language can shape the very way speakers think. For me however, the difference seems to go beyond that. To me, different languages seem to have 'personalities'. The way things are pronounced, the rhythm, the tone, and the intonations of a language all give it a unique character, and expressing something in one language can evoke certain feelings that can't be evoked in another.

Ship of Theseus

Friday, June 17, 2011

An ancient Greek legend refers to a certain ship ridden home by the Greek hero Theseus. Over the years, the ship's planks decayed, but the people of Athens, in honor of their hero, preserved it by replacing the planks with new ones. This went on, and eventually came to the point where the ship was then composed of completely different parts from when it was first built.

Was this still Theseus's ship?

And if it wasn't. How about if it had one original plank? Or two?

I was following the pack
All swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red tied around their throats
To keep their little heads
From falling in the snow
And I turned around and there you go
And, Michael, you would fall
And turn the white snow red as strawberries
In the summertime
~Fleet Foxes, White Winter Hymnal
